Its name means 'fire,' and true to that, the active volcano Pico do Fogo (2,829 m — Cabo Verde's highest point) rises at its center. In the Chã das Caldeiras caldera, volcanic-ash soils produce the famous Fogo wine. The climb is fierce but rewards you with unforgettable, moon-like scenery.
